Electrabel, the Belgian unit of French power group GDF Suez, is to invest €1.2bn ($1.68bn) in a biomass and coal energy plant in Rotterdam.

The Dutch 800MW plant will produce 25% less carbon dioxide than a conventional unit, Electrabel said.

The new plant should be completed by 2013.
