US nuclear operator Exelon is to return the 619MW Oyster Creek nuclear power station in New Jersey to service.

The plant was automatically shut from full power on 12 July 2009 due to the loss of offsite power, which is believed to have been caused by a severe electrical storm.

In a report to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, operators at the plant said that both startup transformers were de-energised due to the loss of power flow on the distribution lines.

Exelon re-energised the transformers within three hours.
