India is set to unveil its first solar power target as soon as September 2009, pledging to boost output from near zero to 20GW by 2020.

The move comes as the country firms up its national plan to fight global warming, drafts documents reveal, writes Reuters.

The target is part of an ambitious $19bn, 30-year scheme that could increase India's leverage in international talks for a new UN climate pact talks taking place in December 2009.

If fully implemented, solar power would be equivalent to an eighth of India's current installed power base.
