Greek electricity firm Public Power Corp (PPC) said that forest fires in Athens have resulted in only minor damage to its power grid.

PPC spokesman Kimon Steriotis told Reuters that the high-voltage transmission system was not damaged and the fire had only destroyed some poles.

Steriotis added that 47 power substations were preventatively shut in the affected areas, a decline from 168 on Sunday.

Since last week, fires have destroyed nearly 30,000 acres of forest in populated parts of Athens and have caused thousands of people in the Greek capital to evacuate their houses.
