Energy customers in the UK have been increasingly getting into debt with energy payments, according to industry regulator Ofgem, which says that 25% above the average amount of customers have unpaid bills.

And with the recession still affecting UK companies, and winter around the corner, that figure is set to rise.

Ofgem said that 1.3 million people in the UK owed an average of £230 each at the start of this year alone, however, some customers were in debt by £600 or more.

Hefty penalties induced by suppliers have increased the burden on those already struggling to pay.
