The EU will spend the next five years working towards a Europe-wide electricity and natural gas grid according to European Commission President Jose Barroso.

In his first mandate for the European parliament, which outlined Borosso’s goals for the EU come 2020 before facing votes for his position later this month, Borosso said energy needed to be a priority in the years to come.

Energy security in the EU has always been a priority, with many European nations reliant on gas-rich countries such as Russia for supply.

Borosso says while some initiatives such as the Nabucco pipeline that will transport Caspian gas will start soon, more needs to be done to ensure a constant supply to countries in Europe.

Borosso also says he wants to see further reductions in CO2 in electricity plants.

If elected, Borosso will sit his term for another five years.
