South Africa will need 20GW of new power generation capacity by 2020 and could require double that amount a decade later to meet the country's rising demand, utility Eskom has announced.

The company said a new third power station will be needed by 2017 to help meet South Africa's fast rising demand, in addition to the two coal-fired power stations currently under construction.

The two stations are meant to supply an additional 4,800MW each.

To fire its power stations, Eskom said it will require 180-200 million tons of coal a year from 2018.
