Canadian Hydro Developers is to acquire rights to the world's largest offshore project from US-based renewable company Wasatch Wind, it has been revealed.

The 4,400MW offshore wind prospect is situated offshore near on of the Great Lakes near the province of Ontario, Canada. On completion is expected to be the largest offshore operation in the world, supplying enough renewable energy to power over two million homes.

The project will be built in phases with the initial 400MW to 500MW capacity expected to become operational in the last quarter 2014.

Construction should follow the granting of regulatory and environmental approvals, funding and site release from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, said Canadian Hydro.

Canadian Hydro owns and operates two large wind farms in Canada and about 40% of Ontario’s installed renewable power capacity.
