Zambia’s Energy Ministry has asked electricity utility Zesco to review safety measures at all of its facilities following a fire last month at the Kariba North Bank power plant.
Three people died in the accident at Kariba that gutted the plant and caused a loss of as much as 240 megawatts of electricity output.
The fire was caused by a flying spark from a welding machine, Energy Minister Kenneth Konga said in a statement in parliament in the capital, Lusaka, reports Bloomberg.
“We have asked Zesco to completely review their safety measures at all their plants to avoid a recurrence,” Konga said.
Zesco (The Zambia Electricity Supply Corp) exports power to South Africa, Namibia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
