The US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded an $11.4m grant to Honeywell as part of the nation’s push to modernise its electric system.

The grant is one of several from a smart grid funding package under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), aimed at creating a more efficient, reliable and secure electric system across the US.

Honeywell will use the grant to support a critical peak pricing response programme that is aimed at helping commercial and industrial facilities in the Southern California Edison (SCE) service territory.

The programme will support nearly 700 customers as SCE and other California utilities move towards critical peak pricing – a new programme that offers rate discounts during the summer months to customers who can reduce or shift power during periods of peak electrical consumption.

Honeywell will also provide ongoing support and engineering services for the project.
