Portugese wind developer EDP Renewables will invest $4bn in building new wind farms in the US over the next three years.

The company said $1.5bn has already been committed to create a capacity of 800MW in the US.

EDP CEO Antonio Mexia said the next step is to enact an aggressive renewable electricity standard (RES) to ensure more companies can make longer term investments in this sector.

The RES aims to create a specific fraction of the nation’s electricity requirements from renewable energy sources.
