Syria and Iran have signed an agreement to build a new 450MW power plant near Homs in central Syria.

The €240m plant is expected to begin operation by mid 2011 as part of the Jender Power Station expansion in Syria, according to Kuwait's news agency KUNA.

The Syrian Government is expected to secure funds for the project.

The Syrian Ministry of Electricity and Iran's Mapna Company will jointly develop the plant.
