RWE npower has sought permission from the British Government to develop a 2,000MW gas-fired power station.

The US$1.62bn (£1bn) gas-fired plant will be developed on the site of the former Willington A and B plants.

The company’s project manager Mike Peel said that as some of the UK’s existing power stations are coming to the end of their operational lives, there is an increasing need for new power generation from a diverse range of fuel sources.

"Gas is an important part of this mix and we believe that our Willington site could be a very strong option for new generating capacity," Peel said.

The government will consult the local authorities over the next year before considering the planning application.
