Siemens said it plans to launch a wind turbine generator R&D competence centre at the University of Sheffield, England.

The Sheffield Siemens Wind Power Research Centre (S²WP) will specialise in the technology, architecture and design of onshore and offshore wind turbine generators for the international market.

The company will initially strengthen its core team and work with the university to establish in-house competencies in generator design that will maximise power conversion.

The partnership will provide the R&D centre with access to the university's facilities and 70 academic and research personnel.

The first endorsement of the tie-up came from the Northern Wind Innovation Programme and Denmark-based Siemens Wind Power, which has sanctioned £1m for the joint innovation programme.

Siemens is also providing an additional £0.55m as direct funds to the university.
