Green energy company Enova said it is to build a NOK137m (US $23.1m) offshore wind turbine prototype to produce 10MW of energy.

Enova has awarded the project to Sway to build the turbine with a rotor diameter of 145m, the largest of its kind.

Sway and Smartmotor has developed a floating turbine concept that reduces turbine weight and the number of moving parts and uses a gearless generator system.

The concept will result in higher energy generation for offshore wind power, and thus also lower operating costs, according to an Enova statement.

The turbine will be tested on land for two years before being tested on North Sea as part of the Sway project with floating turbines.
