Western Massachusetts Electric Company has announced plans to build the first of several large-scale solar energy facilities on the Silver Lake Boulevard site in the US.

The project is expected to yield up to 1.8MW of power from solar energy.

The site combines two brownfield properties owned by WMECo and the Pittsfield Economic Development Authority (PEDA), that will form one of the largest solar facilities in New England, US.

The utility plans to begin construction on the project in the second quarter of 2010.
