Groundwork is being laid for the creation of an independent Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) in the UK, bringing the country one step closer to the construction of new nuclear plants.

The movement towards renewable nuclear energy took a step forward after the publication today of Draft legislation to create the new body, which will improve the regulation of civil nuclear energy.

Minister of State for Energy Lord Hunt said nuclear power must be part of our future energy mix and safety and security are of paramount importance.

The government also announced the launch of new consultations covering methodology to determine a fixed unit price for nuclear waste disposal and also to clarify requirements set out in the Energy Act 2008 in relation to Funded Decommissioning Programmes.
