A gas centrifuge uranium enrichment plant owned by the Louisiana Energy Services in New Mexico, US, is to go online after a green light from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
The facility can now start operation of the first cascade – a series of rotating cylinders using centrifugal force to separate uranium isotopes – under its NRC licence.
Under the new licence, the Louisiana Energy Services facility will enrich uranium up to 5% of the isotope uranium-235 for use in manufacturing nuclear fuel for power plants.
The NRC said the plant will continue to be monitored to ensure the continued protection of people and the environment in the area.
