The Shaw Group, Toshiba Corporation and Exelon Nuclear Partners are teaming up to pursue nuclear power projects in Saudi Arabia.

The groups are coming together to pursue engineering, procurement, construction and operations projects for nuclear power plants using Toshiba's Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR).

Toshiba and Shaw will look after engineering, procurement and construction while Exelon will provide operations and related services for projects the team wins.

The group will also use Westinghouse AP1000 technology, a passively cooled nuclear technology.

In April 2010, Saudi Arabia established a high-level organisation to oversee all aspects of its nuclear power industry.

Shaw is currently working in Saudi Arabia, performing a three-phase study to define and recommend operational improvements at 53 power plants throughout the kingdom.

Toshiba and Exelon Nuclear will require framework agreements on civil nuclear cooperation between Saudi Arabia, the US and Japan to work in the country.
