ESB International (ESBI) and Marine Current Turbines (MCT) will together develop an initial phase of a 100MW tidal energy project off the Antrim coast in Northern Ireland.

ESBI and MCT plan to submit a proposal to the forthcoming Marine Leasing Round in Northern Ireland to receive approval for lease from the Crown Estate.

The two firms will develop the initial phase of the project using MCT SeaGen device if they receive the approval and bring the project onstream by 2018.

The tidal power project will aid Northern Ireland in achieving its marine renewable energy targets of generating 300MW of tidal energy by 2020.
