ABB has formed collaboration with Samsung SDI to jointly set up microgrid systems, which will include power storage solutions.

According to the global commercial alliance signed between the Switzerland power technology firm and the South Korean Samsung, the companies will develop modular and scalable microgrid solutions, using lithium-ion batteries.

The firms will also work together to sell off the new invention in energy markets.

While the Swiss ABB will offer technologies for electrification, control optimisation, stabilisation and expert consulting services for the product, Samsung SDI will be responsible for its batteries and battery management system.

"Together with ABB, Samsung SDI will make our utmost effort to develop new products and to pioneer new markets."

The South Korean firm’s expertise in battery and materials is expected to boost ABB’s energy business to include power storage solutions.

Samsung will also benefit from the project by gaining access to markets for microgrid systems via ABB’s extensive network.

ABB CEO Ulrich Spiesshofer said: "This strategic alliance allows us to combine our complementary capabilities and will enable us to bring optimised solutions to our customers."

Samsung SDI president and CEO Namseong Cho said: "Together with ABB, we will make our utmost effort to develop new products and to pioneer new markets to keep on being the world’s best ESS company."
