Alstom Grid has won a contract from Saudi Electricity Company to supply flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) to the Quwayyah substation, located approximately 200km west of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Under the contract, Alstom Grid's Tampere-based Power Electronics unit will engineer, manufacture, test and deliver the Static VAr Compensator (SVC) (-50/+170MVAr 132kV) with the associated capacitors and air-core reactors for the substation.
The company's local unit in Riyadh will be responsible for managing the civil, construction and installation works, supply logistics (transformers, 132kV gas-insulated substation and equipment) and local project management.
The SVC, which is part of a project with a total value of around €30m for Alstom Grid, will enhance power quality across the utility's AC network.
Alstom Grid Power Electronics Unit managing director Jouni Malkonen said the latest contract is important proof of the company's competitiveness in the Middle East transmission market and shows the trust that customers have in its capability to deliver complex power transmission projects.
SVCs, a FACTS solution, supply reactive power (capacitive or inductive) to stabilise the voltage and dampen transmission system instabilities and reduce flicker, including faults and fluctuating loads for both transmission and industrial applications, balancing the energy flow as required by the transmission network.
With FACTS high-voltage AC transmission solutions, grid operators can attain accurate control of reactive network power, maximise power flow along existing lines and improve steady-state and dynamic stability within the system.
The company claims FACTS technologies require minimal infrastructure investment, low environmental impact and rapid implementation time.
Alstom Grid's FACTS solutions also include mechanically switched capacitors with damping networks; STATCOM; fixed series capacitors and thyristor-controlled series capacitors.
