The Dominion Bridgeport Fuel Cell park, to be constructed in the US state of Connecticut, will produce 14.9MW of power – enough to supply 15,000 homes in the region with electricity.

Under a 15-year fixed power purchase agreement, the electricity generated at the fuel cell power station will be sold to Connecticut Light & Power, a subsidiary of Northeast Utilities.

The project, which will use a reactive process that converts natural gas into electricity, is expected to be completed and placed into operation in late 2013.

Dominion Resources has acquired this project from US-based fuel cell power plants developer FuelCell Energy (FCE), which will build, operate and maintain the facility under a deal signed between the two firms.

FCE will provide its five proprietary Direct FuelCell stationary fuel cell systems for the project and supply an organic rankine turbine that will use waste heat from the fuel cells to produce 15MW of power.

The Bridgeport plant is part of a programme called Project 150, which is sponsored by Connecticut State and supported by the Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority to grow clean energy projects in the state by 150MW.

Commenting on the fuel cell power station, Dominion chairman, president and CEO Thomas F Farrell II said it is another significant step in the firm’s efforts to identify and develop opportunities to produce reliable and cost-effective clean energy.

"We are now adding fuel cell technology to our energy portfolio that already includes wind, hydro, biomass and, soon, solar," Farrell added.

"This project supports Connecticut’s clean energy goals while producing significant economic development benefits for the State and the City of Bridgeport."
