The World Bank has approved a $78m loan for the Kazakhstan Alma Electricity Transmission Project.
The project will expand the capacity of the Almaty Oblast transmission network to improve electricity supply in the Almaty region.
The bank will finance the construction of a 500kV overhead transmission line (OHTL) from the YuKGRES substation to the Alma substation for the project.
World Bank will also fund the procurement and project management consulting services for the construction of 500kV OHTL.
The project, valued at $200m, also includes the construction of transmission lines between Alma to Kensai substation. In addition, the substations will be modernised
The project will provide relatively low-cost and higher quality energy, eliminating energy supply constraint and increasing the region’s competitiveness in industrial and commercial development.
The World Bank loan will have a maturity of 25 years with a five-year grace period.
The project will also receive $122.9m from the Government of Kazakhstan.
