IBM has signed a research collaboration agreement with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and IIT Kharagpur to develop open system designs for smarter power grids.
The open designs will boost the potential of Phasor Measurement Units (PMU), a new type of sensor on power grids.
The IIT will develop the new power system applications, software systems and networking architecture for the project to ensure that the data collected from different locations is appropriately transmitted to one location.
The systems will analyse the data collected to provide valuable insights to the grid operators, which will help improve grids to enhance productivity and reduce inefficiencies in power consumption.
The results of the research work will be made publicly available to allow governments and businesses worldwide to take advantage of the PMU technology.
The project is part of IBM’s Open Collaborative Research (OCR) programme to nurture innovation through university-industry research collaboration.
