FirstEnergy has decided to scrap plans to repower its RE Burger plant in Ohio, US, which would have generated electricity using biomass.
The firm will permanently close down units 4 and 5 of the plant by 31 December due to financial woes.
FirstEnergy Generation executive vice-president and president Gary Leidich said “Despite our best efforts, we were unable to overcome the challenges of the difficult economy to cost-effectively repower the Burger Plant to burn biomass.
“We are disappointed that this groundbreaking project will not be realised, particularly because plant employees worked with such spirit and determination to find a way to keep the units operating,” Leidich added.
Market prices for electricity have fallen significantly and expected market prices no longer support a repowered Burger Plant, according to the company.
