The UK will need emissions performance standards to meet its climate change targets, according to a new Energy and Climate Change Committee report.
The report, released this week, states that Britain’s existing energy policy is inadequate and will not promote investments in low carbon projects such as offshore wind farms and nuclear reactors.
The standards will provide certainty to investors and help bring down investment cost for green technologies, as per the report.
The Energy and Climate Change Committee chairman Tim Yeo said in a statement that a change in the law to require cleaner power stations is needed to ensure the UK doesn’t get left behind with an antiquated, expensive and highly polluting energy system.
