ABB will build substations for Qatar under a $140m contract from the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation, Kahramaa.

ABB Power Systems division head Peter Leupp said that the substations will use the latest gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) technology, providing a compact footprint that is suited for urban applications.

ABB will design, build and install four new 66/11kV GIS substations equipped with its automation systems for the contract, which also includes shunt reactors, transformers, medium-voltage switchgear and cables.

The company will also upgrade four existing transmission substations to help strengthen the power network and enhance grid reliability.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.

Kahramaa, the sole electricity transmission and distribution system owner and operator in Qatar, is expanding its power grid to meet growing demand for power in the region.
