Western Massachusetts Electric Company (WMECo) has selected a site in Massachusetts, US, for the construction of a solar energy facility.
The site in the City of Springfield will accommodate about 17,000 solar panels capable of generating 4.2MW of solar energy.
The $22m project is expected to generate several hundred thousand dollars of annual property tax revenue to the City of Springfield.
The construction of the project will begin in the second quarter of 2011 upon receiving local approval, and 6MW authorisation for the facility from the Department of Public Utilities (DPU).
According to the Green Communities Act (GCA), each Massachusetts electric utility may own up to 50MW of solar generation, subject to approval by the Department of Public Utilities (DPU).
