Southern California Edison (SCE) has successfully completed the replacement of steam generators for Unit 3 of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in California, US.
The reconnection of the unit to the power grid marks the end of a ten-year construction project for the power station.
The four new steam generators, two per reactor, are 65ft tall, 22ft in diameter and weigh 640t.
The components will produce steam to drive the plant’s turbines, which will generate enough electricity to serve 1.4 million average homes.
SCE will replace the San Onofre plant’s steam generators following an assessment that showed it would save customers around $1bn during the plant’s current licence period that runs through to 2022.
Total project costs of $671m will be shared among plant co-owners SCE, San Diego Gas & Electric and the city of Riverside.
