Work to restore Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant resumed today, after being delayed by black smoke leaking from a reactor.

Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) will continue to pump seawater into the reactor and the storage pool holding spent fuel to avoid further radiation leaks.

Lighting has been restored at the control room for the No. 1 reactor.

According to the Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan, residents in more than 30km of the plant may have been exposed to a total of more than 100,000 microsieverts of radioactive iodine since the beginning of the nuclear disaster.

The plant was damaged by an earthquake that hit the country on 11 March 2011 and triggered a tsunami that in turn shut down power at the plant.
