SunPower is to provide 11MW of solar power systems for Tucson Electric Power’s (TEP) bright roofs programme.
TEP will buy the SunPower T5 Solar Roof Tile that integrates a high-efficiency solar panel, frame and mounting system into a single pre-engineered unit.
The T5 Roof Tile system, tilted at a 5° angle, almost doubles the energy generated per square metre compared with conventional systems mounted flat on rooftops.
The firm will use the SunPower technology to install, own and operate multiple solar power systems on leased rooftop space atop schools and other large public buildings in Tucson, Arizona, US.
The installations will be linked directly to distribution circuits and will generate power to serve over 1,800 Tucson homes.
TEP chairman, president and CEO Paul Bonavia said that SunPower’s high-efficiency solar technology will allow it to produce more power per installation and it is cost-competitive, easy to install and low maintenance.
“Underutilised rooftops will be used to generate emission-free energy for our community, helping us achieve our renewable energy goals,” Bonavia said.
