US-based developer enXco has received the final approval for the planned 150MW Merricourt Wind Project, to be built in the US state of North Dakota.
The project will comprise 100 wind turbines extending over 18 square miles south-east of Kulm.
Upon completion, the plant is expected to generate renewable energy, which will be sufficient to power approximately 43,500 homes.
The project received the certificate of site compatibility from the state agency Dakota Public Service Commission, which will allow enXco to begin construction once it settles its dispute with Xcel.
Xcel recently filed a suit in an attempt to abrogate its contract to purchase the project on the basis that the project was not permitted following several procedural and weather delays.
enXco president and CEO Tristan Grimbert said enXco and Xcel Energy had announced plans to develop and build the Merricourt Wind Project in November 2008.
He also said the company remains dedicated to its contractual obligations with Xcel and would be happy to build this project within the stipulated schedule rather than pursue legal action.
