ABB has secured a $1bn contract from TenneT to supply a power link connecting offshore North Sea wind farms to Germany’s mainland grid.
The company said it will install the world’s largest high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system with a capacity of 900MW.
ABB will also design, engineer, supply and install an offshore platform, offshore and onshore converter stations and land and sea cable systems.
The transmission link will transport power from the 400MW Gode Wind II and other wind farms to an offshore HVDC converter station.
The station will supply the electricity to the onshore HVDC station in Dorpen on the German coast through 135km of underwater and underground cables.
The link is expected to begin operations in 2015 and supply clean wind-generated electricity sufficient to power more than 1.5 million houses.
