Tanzania plans to invest TZS1.2tn ($741.89m) in the development of emergency power projects by the end of 2012.
The country plans to add 572MW of power to the national grid against the current deficit of 260MW.
Tanzania Energy and Minerals Minister William Ngeleja said the government is seeking a loan from China to fund the construction of a natural gas pipeline from Mtwara in southern Tanzania to Dar es Salaam.
The country plans to invest in gas, oil, jet fuel and coal-fired thermal plants and to provide loan guarantees to enable the its utility to raise funds for new power projects, reports Reuters.
State-run Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) is set to spend TZS523bn ($319.66m) on emergency power projects by end of this year and earn TZS115bn ($70m) in revenue from electricity sales due to low power tariffs.
