Metso has secured a €20m contract to convert a coal-fired boiler at Elektrocieplownia Bialystok’s combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Bialystok, Poland, to a biomass-fired bubbling fluidised bed (BFB) boiler.
This conversion will replace the coal fuel supply to the CHP plant of 460 MWth with biomass fuel to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the plant.
Elektrocieplownia Bialystok president Andrzej Schroeder said this project will help the company reduce future carbon dioxide emissions and produce more green electricity using Metso’s technology, which includes boiler modifications and an automation system to control and monitor emissions.
The converted CHP plant is expected to begin operations from December 2012.
