US Department of Energy (DoE) has granted $43m to boost the development of offshore wind power projects in the country.

The DoE will provide the funding over a period of five years to improve the technology of offshore wind turbines, including control systems and support-structure designs, and to overcome the challenges faced in the sector.

Financing includes $4.5m provided for the Biodiversity Research Institute, $4.1m for Alstom and $4m for Siemens, reports Bloomberg.

US Energy Secretary Steven Chu said the US has abundant offshore wind resource that remains untapped.
