The Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) has opened a new solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in Masdar City, United Arab Emirates.
The plant will generate 10MW of clean electricity, which represents annual carbon savings of 15,000 tons.
The plant will provide green energy to the temporary Masdar site administration facilities, and power the ongoing construction activities of Masdar City, said ADWEA.
The plant consists of 87,777 panels, 50% thin film and 50% crystalline silicon.
The plant, with the construction costing $50m, is projected to generate 17,500MWh of clean energy each year.
The construction on the 212,000 square metre plant commenced in August 2008 and was designed and constructed by Enviromena Power Systems.
The carbon savings of 15,000 tons is the equivalent of taking 3,300 cars off Abu Dhabi’s roads each year, said the Authority.
