US-based DTE Energy has shut its 1,100MW unit 2 at Fermi nuclear power plant near Newport, New England, for repairs following a leak.

The company is to repair a cooling water leak near the boiling water reactor as part of a planned shutdown, the company said.

According to the officials, the leak was small, had no impact on nuclear safety and does not involve any release of radioactivity to the environment.

The leak is in the containment area of the reactor and is designed to prevent any radioactive gases or fluids from escaping to the environment, the company said.

The plant must be inactive before components within the area can be serviced.
