Renewable energy company SunPower and Canadian energy company Etrion have teamed up to build four solar power plants in Italy with a total capacity of 4MW.

SunPower will design and build the plants along with providing operation and maintenance services.

The Italian sites will feature SunPower Tracker technology that follows the sun during the day and delivers up to 25% more energy than fixed-tilt systems, SunPower said.

Etrion CEO Marco Northland said that solar power generation will play an increasingly vital role in efforts to build more renewable, clean energy sources.

Work on first of the four projects will begin by the end of this month. The first electricity sales from the projects are expected during the third quarter of 2010.
