GE has secured a $1.4bn wind turbines supply contract from Caithness Energy for a wind farm project near Arlington in Oregon, US.

The $2bn 845MW Shepherds Flat wind farm will have 338 advanced GE 2.5xl wind turbines, assembled at its site in Pensacola, Florida.

Under the contract, GE will also provide operational and maintenance services to the wind farm for ten years.

Shepherds Flat, which is spread over 30 miles² in north-central Oregon, will be the first farm in North America to use the company’s 2.5MW wind turbines.

The wind farm will provide clean power to Southern California Edison for consumption by the west coast region. It will annually produce two billion kWh of renewable energy, which will be sufficient to power 235,000 households in California.

Construction work on the wind farm will commence next year and is due for completion in 2012.
