Tokyo Electric Power’s (TEPCO) said nuclear energy generation has surged after two of the seven nuclear reactors at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant resumed operation.

The reactors had been shut down since 2007 following a major earthquake in northern Japan.

The usage rate at TEPCO’s nuclear power plants averaged 67.2%, about 25 percentage points higher than a year earlier after the two units were re-started in December last year.

Consequently, the company’s crude and fuel oil consumption fell by over 60% when compared with the previous year.
