Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) said it plans to replace a liquefied natural gas-fired thermal power plant in Chiba, near Tokyo, with a more advanced system.

The 2,130MW, three-unit plant will employ a more advanced combined cycle (MACC) system where the temperature in the gas turbine rises to about 1,600°C, reports Reuters.

The replacement will allow a heat efficiency of 61% over the present Goi plant that has a capacity of 1,886MW and comprises of six units.

TEPCO, which has filed for the upgrade with the nation’s trade ministry, said it aims to begin operation at the new plant between April 2021 and March 2024.
