The New York Power Authority (NYPA) has shut down the 885MW natural gas and oil-fuelled Charles Poletti power project in the state.

The power plant was shut down in accordance with an agreement signed in 2002 with the State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to improve air quality and reduce emissions.

In accordance with the agreement, the plant has been replaced by a new 500MW natural gas-fired combined-cycle plant at the site, operational since 2005.

The NYPA said it proposes to acquire the shortfall in generation from other sources.
