US utility Con Edison has filed a proposal with the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) to support the development of 25MW of solar energy resources in New York City by 2015.

If it goes ahead the proposal would offset about 16,000 tons of CO2 emissions a year, according to Con Edison.

The utility’s proposal to PSC suggests the State sets aside $24.8m of its renewable energy funds for solar projects to serve households and businesses.

Another $4m would be invested in a residential programme for New York and Westchester County customers to use solar energy for hot water, according to the plans.
