The EU should be able to hit its 20% target for the use of renewable energies, according to a report by the European Commission.

In a report released today, the EC said the EU should generate about 20.3% of its energy from renewables by 2020.

EC Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger said member states had shown a lot of initiative in the area of renewable energies, showing support through funding development programmes and encouraging business in this area.

Oettinger said the commission will now press countries to go beyond the targets set for the next decade.
