The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) announced it has received 14 bids from international developers to work on the first independent power and water project in the emirate.

The first project will comprise a 1,500MW, 120 million-gallon-a-day desalination complex located at the Hassyan site on the border with Abu Dhabi, reports

The launch of the independent water and power plant (IWPP) will require DEWA to establish new legislation to cater for private sector participation in the power and water sectors, according to the website.

Dubai has set up an independent regulator under the auspices of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy.

DEWA will evaluate the bids and award the consultancy contract by June 2010. In addition, it will award a contract for building the plants in 15 to 18 months.
