A US coal-fired power plant operated by Black Hills Power Plant has started operating three months earlier than scheduled.

Black Hills chairman, President and CEO David R. Emery said that the mine-mouth, 110MW coal-fired power plant, which is made using emissions control technology, is among the cleanest in the US.

The station is expected to produce low-cost electricity.

Black Hills Power recently completed a seven-year power purchase agreement with the City of Gillette, which includes an option for Gillette to purchase 23% of Wygen III.

Montana-Dakota Utilities earlier purchased a 25% ownership interest in Wygen III.
