Wärtsilä will provide equipment for the Naryanganj and Khulna power plant projects in Bangladesh in contracts worth €68m ($84.2m).
Under the contracts, Summit Naryanganj Power will receive Wärtsilä 46GD gas-diesel engines and auxiliary equipment for its Naryanganj power plant project.
The dual-fuel engines will allow the plant to switch from heavy fuel oil (HFO) operation to gas at a later stage when gas becomes available at the site.
The engines can run on a range of fuels including crude oil, heavy fuel oil, light fuel oil, natural gas, associated gas, or any combination of liquid fuel and gas.
Khulna Power Unit II will also take delivery of Wärtsilä 46 engines and auxiliary equipment for its Khulna Extension project under the deal.
The plants are expected to be operational as early as March 2011 and will allow Bangladesh to deal with the current power shortage.
The Government of Bangladesh said it urgently plans to deal with current power shortages, and these two new power plants will add significant generating capacity to the national grid.
