Vietnam plans to build 13 nuclear reactors by 2030 with a combined capacity of 15GW.
Nuclear power will eventually account for 10% of the country’s total generation capacity through a nuclear-power development plan recently approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Reactors will be built in eight locations in the central provinces of Ninh Thuan, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Ha Tinh and Quang Ngai, according to the plan.
The government plans to develop nuclear power plants to meet the rising demand for electricity in the country that has one of the fastest economic growth rates in Asia.
The first reactor with a 1,000MW capacity is expected to be completed by 2020 and the second by 2021.
About 30% and 40% of the construction work will be undertaken by domestic companies, according to The Wall Street Journal.
